New England Patriots History 2016

The NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS HISTORY is full of triumph and success. The Patriots, as a brand, has been home to many a great name in the sport.

Name and Logo Origin: In late November, 1959, the American Football League awarded the eighth and final franchise to Boston business executive, Billy Sullivan. A “name the team” contest was soon conducted by the franchise management and the most popular submission was “The Boston Patriots.”

Owner of the Patriots: The team is currently owned by business magnate, Robert Kraft, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Kraft Group. Robert Kraft acquired the team from James Orthwein for a staggering $174 Million, in 1994. The investment paid off almost instantly as from the very first full day of Robert Kraft’s ownership, the team sold nearly 6,000 season tickets shattering the previous single day record of 979. Orthwein had acquired the team from Victor Kiam of the Remington Products fortune, in 1992. Kiam purchased the team from original owner Billy Sullivan in 1988 for $84 Million.

First Game and Opponent: Shortly after the first training camp was opened at the University of Massachusetts on July 4, 1960, the Patriots played the AFL’s first-ever pre-season game and defeated the Buffalo Bills, 28-7 on July 30, 1960. On September 9, the same year, in the first ever official season AFL game, the Patriots lost to the Denver Broncos by a score of 10-13.

Founder and Franchise: Billy Sullivan was a Boston College graduate, United States Navy veteran, and successful businessman. By 1959, he had been involved in several business ventures and wanted to open an NFL franchise in his hometown of Boston. The NFL turned it down as there were five previous Boston football franchises that had moved or failed. Billy then approached the AFL and negotiated a deal in which he was awarded their eighth and final franchise for $25,000.

Chairman and members: The Patriots are currently owned by Robert Kraft who acts as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. His son, Jonathon Kraft is the acting president of the franchise and Head Coach, Bill Belichick acts as the team’s General Manager.

First Name and Name Change History: In 1971, after the AFL/NFL merger, the Patriots relocated to the Foxborough, Massachusetts area in 1971. The team proposed a name change from the Boston Patriots to the Bay State Patriots, but the name had been rejected by the NFL. Rather than go by “Bay State Patriots”, the team claimed New England as their home territory and adjusted the name accordingly.

Logo and Jersey: “Pat Patriot”, their mascot used through 1992, was a Minuteman cartoon preparing to snap a football and was drawn by Phil Bissell of the Boston Globe. Their logo is now a silver patriot with a navy hat with a white star and red stripes. Their uniform colors are red, white, and blue. Their home uniform includes a navy jersey with silver and red accents and silver pants. Their road uniform includes a white jersey with navy accents and navy pants.

Area of Origin: Originating in Boston, the Patriots when quite some time without a regular home field stadium. Home games were played at Fenway Park, Harvard Stadium, Alumni Stadium, and Nickerson Field (all located in or around Boston) during the team’s time in the American Football League.
